as christmas 1969 beckoned, jimi hendrix, bassist billy cox, and drummer buddy miles engaged in extensive rehearsals for their highly anticipated appearances at the fillmore east in new york. branded by hendrix as the band of gypsys, the trio worked feverishly rounding such exciting new original material as >izabella< and >machine gun< into form. keenly aware of the special significance his forthcoming concerts represented, jimi wanted to prepare something extraordinary for his audience. to mark the occasion in his own inimitable fashion, jimi readied this special medley of holiday favorites to celebrate both christmas and the dawning of a new decade. this recording was made at baggys studios, a manhattan rehearsal facility the group preferred. it by no means should be considered a polished studio recording made to hendrixs exacting specifications. it is, instead, perhaps even more revealing. this is a glimpse of jimi simply having fun in the company of close friends. the photograph of jimi posing as santa claus was originally organized on behalf of the uk music newspaper record mirror. to help publicize the december 1967 release of axis: bold as love, the groups second album, jimi agreed to pose as santa for the issues cover. an alternate photograph from that session, with jimi bearing gifts in the form of axis: bold as love, is featured here. as an added bonus, also included is jimis playful >three little bears<. this track was recorded with the experience at the record plant in may 1968 during sessions for electric ladyland. bypassed for that album, >three little bears< was originally issued as part of the 1972 posthumous compilation war heroes. it has been unavailable in the us for nearly twenty-five years.

>a correction< is the new album from fieldhead and continues the dusty, bereft sounds of previous releases � they shook hands for hours (home assembly 2009) and riser (gizeh 2010). 2010 saw paul elam depart the uk for vancouver, canada and there is no doubt that the vast northern candian landscapes have influenced the new fieldhead material. the familiar tape hiss, scratchy, decaying atmospheres remain in place but with a correction elam has managed to sculpt a vaster, more expansive palate of sounds. minimalistic on first listen, a correction is a record which slowly unfurls on multiple listens to reveal subtle melodies and details that dont distract from the overal ambience but in fact set apart fieldheads music from many other, safer artists within the genre.

dutch master orlando voorn with a two-track release containing some of his pioneering material as format. rightly recognised as one of a handful of artists who built the early, crucial bridges between europe and detroit in the late-eighties and early nineties via collaborations with juan atkins and output for kms, voorn�s legacy is unquestionable. winning hollands dmc championships in 1986 and 1987 was the real career catalyst and there seems to be no let up in quality since then, either as a dj or a multifaceted, multi-genre producer. these two tracks are produced in 1993 and still didnt loose their magic!damn right and jam session have that the raw charm, edge and vibe sounds so current. energetic, melodic and broken, both tracks touch on a myriad of styles but what shines through is how modern electronic styles can be traced back to this sort of fantastic, unique output. format remastered could be sitting snuggly alongside modern house, techno, uk garage, uk funky and many more contemporary styles. this is a rare chance to grab beautifully treated versions of classic voorn material.

in june 2011 subtext recordings was restarted after a six year hiatus for the release of the second lp from emptyset, titled >demiurge<. this album represented a transition from the first two subtext releases, a pair of seminal experimental recordings from the groundbreaking duo vexd, switching path into a new terrain that allowed for the distortion and dissolution of the sequencer grid and shifted the focus of the label from the programmed to the composed.
through this development subtext recordings has evolved into a conversation between emptyset, the ex-vexd artist roly porter, and composer paul jebanasam, who has spearheaded the revival of the label. this new release continues this dialogue by commissioning both porter and jebanasam to respond to the material contained within >demiurge< and develop their own interpretations of the original album.

in the 18 months since his brilliant debut release for we play house, luv jam has been steadily building his profile with a number of releases, and now he returns on vibrations with his first full ep of material since that auspicious first record. the eps a-side is a typically lush foray into stripped back, slo-mo house, with opener tough future utilizing little more than a 303 bassline and 909 kick to slowly build up to its raindrop crescendo, and >rubber band< employing a number a dreamy synths atop its tense, gurgling bass. the pace picks up on the b-side with >last floor hotel (mega mix)< upping the tempo and going into full on acid mode, with its furious pace accented with frenetic cowbell hits and industrial textures. the ep closes with >elastic band< a deeper excursion into jacking house, characterized by its flurry of handclaps, weighed up by its rubbery bassline.
